The word ‘Miss’ officially banned in France

As announced by the office of French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, the term ‘Miss’ would be struck from official papers, along with that of “maiden name” or “married name” for women on Tuesday.

It would be inquiring all ministries and regional senior officials to ban such wording.  Authorities will be using the term “Madame” (Madam), equivalent to the male “Monsieur” (Sir), and drop all reference to the husband’s name, unless it is that officially engaged by the woman.

Some women’s organizations last year started a movement to do away with “Miss” in official documents, in conflict that it was discriminatory to force women to state their marital status.

Solidarity Minister Roselyne Bachelot, welcomes and supports the campaign to end the discrimination.
